I’m a business coach. I spend time each week on the telephone coaching and teaching others on their path to knowing more about internet marketing, the internet, blogging, podcasting, etc. I love knowing that I am a short cut to knowledge for my clients.
They could skip coaching and determine to ferret out the information and directions they need on their own, but it would take a heck of a lot more than 60 minutes to do so and they’re smart like that so they are willing to pay for a shorter learning curve.
This week I got some coaching from someone else.
I wanted to learn something new and after taking a look at it I knew it would probably spend hours and hours digging through documentation and not figure it all out. I also knew someone well versed in the script so I asked for their help. After a 45 minutes phone call (that I paid for) I was up and running.
Sounds great doesn’t it?
Why don’t more people seek out qualified consultants?
For some it’s a matter of budget.
One on one coaching is expensive. Some niche consultants charge hundreds of dollars an hour to answer your questions. Their highly specialized expertise is worth a lot so it’s fair, but that doesn’t change your meager business budget.
I totally understand tight finances. I’ve been there and done that! I got my start on an absolute shoestring. I was in debt up to my single mom eyeballs but there came a point where I had to start investing in myself and my business if I were going to start making more money. The same is true for everyone.
There’s a lot to be said for being resourceful, digging deep and learning all that you can on your own. It tests your commitment and passion. That can only take you so far when it comes to complicated technology and not taking advantage of a more experienced entrepreneurs insights when it is within your reach is foolhardy.
My advice? As soon as you have business income, dedicate a percentage of it to learning resources and coaching. I know you need the money elsewhere but 15 or 20% won’t make that much of a difference to your bills and will make a world of difference to your future business growth.
For others it’s a matter of pride.
They don’t want to admit that they don’t know everything.
I have my own measure of pride. I don’t want to look stupid anymore than the next person. There’s just no value in pretending to know more than you do. It will surely slow down your business growth.
For a few, it’s a lack of knowing what’s available to them.
I took a new client in February who has been leaving each of our coaching sessions feeling giddy with excitement about everything she’s learned. She’s been online for years and never new that she could pay to have someone teach her how to do things step by step so she has been doing a lot of things in a very old fashioned way. I’m loving our time together as much as she does, it’s exciting to see someone ‘get it’ for the first time.
